Municipal Landmark of Manukan Zamboanga del Norte, Rooster-shaped Museum

I was sitting in the cozy couch of Big Joe’s on January 14, eating my dinner with my friend, when I saw the news about the rooster-shaped museum in Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte.
That news urged me to write a story about that gigantic rooster-shaped museum that dominates the Municipality of Manukan. So, I decided to journey in Manukan and to see the rooster-shaped museum.
January 22 is the day I travel to Manukan. Due to my excitement, I woke early. We left Dipolog at 10:00 in the morning and we arrived in Manukan at 11:00 am.
“WOW.” This was the only word that came from my mouth when I was in front of the gigantic rooster-shaped museum. It was really look like a real rooster. It was beautiful and extraordinary. I can hardly imagine how the engineers plan to make such monument.
This gigantic rooster- shaped museum was built on September 2006 and successfully finished on January 2007. The total cost of this museum is P1.3 million. The mayor of Manukan, Hon. Eugene U. Caballero had the idea of building a rooster-shaped museum in order for people to recognize their town.
During our interview, Engr. Pelita S. Pabillaran told me that this gigantic rooster-shaped museum serves as the municipal landmark of Manukan.
Manukan coined from the word “Manok” which is the Visayan term for chicken that is how Manukan got its name. Many townfolks shared that during the Spanish times a very small and insignificant barrio was part of the town of Dapitan (now Dapitan City) which was inhabited mostly by the traditional Subanos. Chickens were plentiful and the most predominant breed was known as “Banukan” and later on this named “Banukan” changed to Manukan.
The height of this huge rooster-shaped museum is 13.60 meters and around 19 meters from the tip of the bill to the tip of the longest feather of the tail.
If you are expecting internal organs inside the statue, you’ll be greatly disappointed. Inside of this museum are some collections of items like; old dresses of the people of Manukan, old cavan, pipe gun, kasing, tirador, salt container, souvenirs, old coins, and “sanggab ug pitlagong.” These old coins are collections of the former Mayor, Ma. Teresa G. Caballero. This “sanggab” is used to collect coconut juice or “tuba” direct from the source and this “pitlagong” is used to clean the tuba source necessary to keep it sweet.
You can tell that people in Manukan is very proud to have this beautiful rooster-shaped museum in their municipality.
Well they say each place have their own unique things to be proud of. Paris became known because of the Eiffel Tower. People in New York are very proud for their Empire State Building. The Indian are also proud of their Taj Mahal. Dubai became famous because of their man-made palm resort.
Here in the Philippines, there are many extraordinary, unique and beautiful things to be proud of. I am very proud that only here in Zamboanga del Norte where we can find a gigantic rooster-shaped museum. It is not a statue, it’s a museum.
My journey was very amazing and because of it I realized that only here in the Philippines where we can find unique, giant and extraordinary things.
