Media in Action: Fair, Balanced and Responsible broadcast Journalism was the theme of the first regional congress held in University of San Jose Recoletos, Cebu City last December 11, 2010. The said congress was sponsored by ComGuild, with its president and CEO, Ms. Jennifer Cruz an organization which is a center of journalism, and participated by different schools from Visayas and Mindanao including the MassCom students from Andres Bonifacio College.
Reporters from different fields were invited as speakers during the 1 day seminar. These reporters includes Mr. Jun Veneracion, a reporter from Kapuso network and Mr. Rico Lucena from Kapamilya network who discussed on investigative reporting. Jun Veneracion included on his discussion the elements effective reporting and news anchoring. The first and the only Filipino reporter from BBC World Mr. Rico Hizon focuses on Business reporting on Global Basis. He mentioned the qualities a journalist must possessed in order to succeed on its chosen field. On the other hand, Ms. Bernadette Reyes, a Kapuso reporter touch more on national business news reporting and magazine writing. Mr. Joey Villarama, a reporter from Kapatid network shared his ideas on news production and the people in production, giving students a view on what it would be like to work behind the camera. The speakers shared advice to the participants to be steadfast and must at all times ready to accept rejections. Journalist should know their purpose or objective in every tic of the clock.
The ComGuild’s objective in organizing the congress was to give exposure to students on how the real media industry works, the organization do this by inviting the best experts in the field who can share their experiences. These sharing of ideas will give students familiarization and hopefully will equipped them when they will become a part of the media industry.
